Now the revision process begins, with a vengeance. It felt loosely worded so I plan to cut around 10,000 words throughout. Also, I've left the final section alone, planning to draft that at the end -- it'll weigh in at around 8,000 words. Plus, in typing I realized that I need to draft a few short pieces to fill in some narrative gaps, which will add about another 4,000 words. So all told the finished product should weigh in at close to where it is now -- something around 60,000 words, 240 pages. I can't wait to hear it when it's done. If you're curious, a long time ago I wrote <a href="http://seedlings.wordpress.com/wordcraft/thetunnel" rel="nofollow">this piece</a>, a modified version of which will appear in the book, included in a longer account of my bike trip to an unrestored section of the Great Wall. (Sorry to Jake, who's already quite familiar with it!) It is typed: 58,237 words, approx. 233 pages.
