a question of ontology

In a cave deep beneath the surface, a screen and a button.

On the screen, a ten-second loop of animation.

On the button, the word OFF.

On the screen, one man drawn in realistic animation driving a spear through the skull of another. From stereo speakers, in a volume loud but not unbearable, corresponding screams (anguished, horrific, nearly inhuman as the skull bones are crushed out of shape), followed by a half-second of silence as the loop reloads to play again.

No explanation.

You stumbled into this chamber by accident, but you are not lost. You can walk away easily, all the way back to the surface and out of the cave. The sound of the speakers does not carry far.

On closer look you find no evident power supply to the screen – it is self-sustaining and will run forever. Also, somehow you know that no one will ever find this chamber again.

It is time for you to leave.

Do you push the button?
